One, Uptown Consignment, has been featured on Style network's reality show, Big Rich Texas. In Dallas two new ones have opened since 2010. Such boutique-like outlets have been popping up in tony neighborhoods of most big cities. A native New Yorker who used to shop only at Bergdorf Goodman, Lord & Taylor, Saks Fifth Avenue and Bloomingdale's, Thomas says that when a friend first suggested a consignment shop outing, "I imagined a thrift store where you would buy Halloween costumes." Now she's a regular at consignment shops, which, she says, "could easily be mistaken for high-end boutiques." Wendy Moss Thomas, a financial advisor with RBC Wealth Management in Seattle, is a typical convert.
The consignor traditionally gets 30% to 40% of the sale price, with the shop keeping the rest, although online consignment services now offer sellers a larger cut. Not to be confused with thrift stores, where donated clothing is sold to benefit a charity, or websites like Gilt that sell new luxury stuff at a discount, upscale consignment shops offer mostly "gently used" designer clothes and accessories that the original purchaser no longer wants (or, perhaps, fits into). It can even be, for an entrepreneurial style maven like Zembruski, a moneymaker as well as a money saver. "I appreciate luxury pieces and invest in them," she says.Ĭonsignment shopping, once considered déclassé and kept hush-hush, is now chic and done in the open. Except for activewear and Uggs, Zembruski still buys almost everything from consignment shops, including furniture, her kids' clothes and additional designer pieces.
